KATBARI ARTS FESTIVAL
The Division of Humanities has sustained its KATBARI Arts Festival in celebration of the National Arts Month of February for about a decade now. The event is held in conjunction with the nation-wide activities led by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. The KatbariArtsfest consists of a series of events that include lecture forums on the arts, art workshops, exhibits, poetry reading, poetry performance, concerts and theater productions. Its purpose is to showcase the creative works of student and faculty artists, enhance the discourse on the study of literature, visual and media arts, and the performing arts and enrich the community life with cultural and artistic events.

Humanities faculty participate in the arts productions as organizers and artists themselves.Visual artist Prof. Dulce Cuna Anacionenliven the festival with her painting exhibitions. Professor Emeritus and poet MerlieAlunangladly serves as resource person in creative writing and teaching of literature workshops. The UPAnBalangaw Performing Arts Group (UPV Chancellor’s Outstanding Student Organization Awardee and two-time UPV Performing Group Awardee) continues to grace the festival with their recent repertoire as directed by Prof. Joycie D. Alegre. Prof. Ma. Zenia Dulce has trains students to perform folk dances that she choreographed. Mr. Anthony Salamiaorganizes the creative fun run with artistic twist and social issues expressed by runners through gestures and outfits. The junior faculty namely Marilou Morales, adept in videography and photography does documentation. Ms. Theresia Katherine Rojas and Marie Villonesorganize cultural events such as the ritualistic TagaySangkay– Local and International Wine Festival. Prof. Irma Tan manages the festival.
Communication and Literature students organize the shows and also serve as artists and members of the cast in the productions. The Theater Arts students produce riveting original works for the annual Installation Art exhibit and the spectacular KALARAKAN Environmental Theater production.
KATBARI Arts Festival manifests the creative vitality of the UPVTC community through the Division of Humanities. This grand culture and arts event has been supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts through its Artist Community Outreach Program and Speakers Bureau. The Department of Tourism Region 8 is also a valuable co-sponsor of KATBARI.
PAGSUBAY LITERARY ARTS FESTIVAL
- A series of literary events that consist of literary lecture-forum, creative writing workshop, poetry exhibit, poetry performance, open mic program, film showing of literary classics, poetry writing contest and poetry publication with emphasis on the Leyte-Samar and Philippine culture in celebration of the National Literature Month of April.
The overarching purpose of PAGSUBAY is to deepen appreciation for poetry and other literary forms as art and cultural expression and to highlight the functions of literature as medium for strengthening cultural entity and as agent for broadening social awareness.
Guest poets who served as resource persons for the 2017 creative writing workshop and as participants in the poetry performance programs were Dr.Victor Emmanuel Carmelo Nadera, Jr. (multi awarded poet/fictionist/performance artist and Director of the Philippine High School for the Arts) and Ms. Daryll Delgado, National Book Awardee for Fiction 2015.
PAG-ARAM HAN PAGSURAT NGAN HAN LITERATURA Seminar-workshops for the Teaching of Creative Writing and Literature
This continuing project addresses the need for enhancing the skills in the teaching of creative writing and literature among secondary and tertiary schools in the Eastern Visayas region.
The Division of Humanities has conducted workshops in creative writing as well as workshops in the teaching of creative writing and literature. Other than Professor Emeritus MerlieAlunan and Tacloban’s own reputable literati Dr. Victor Sugbo and Dr. David Genotiva, among its guest resource persons include literary luminaries like National Artist for Literature BienvenidoLumbera, poet Prof. Ricardo M. De Ungria, New York Writers president Tim Tomlinson., DLSU’s Dr. Dinah Roma, National Book Awardee Daryll Delgado, UMPIL awardee Victor Penaranda and PSHA Director Dr.Victor Emmanuel Carmelo Nadera, Jr.
PAGHINUMDUM Yolanda Commemorative Event
The Division of Humanities has spearheaded the UPVTC Yolanda Commemorative Event named PAGHIHUNDUM (To Remember) since 2014. It is a series of activities co-organized with the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Division of Management and the Division of Social Sciences. PAghinumdum is a complex of ritualistic activities that begin with a program of silence, prayers and candlelighting, a walk on the boulevard in memory of the UPVTC personnel, students and alumni who perished in supertyphoon Yolanda on November 8, 2013. Forums related to disaster risk reduction management and mitigation, climate change, and psychosocial trauma processing and arts for healing workshops have been held. Artists perform in a poetry and musical performance program. A candlelighting ceremony participated by the UPVTC constituents is held in the evening as finale to the activities. The UPVTC will institutionalize this event in honor of the Yolanda victims, to inspire the community of survivors and to contribute in the memorialization of this very significant disaster in history.
