With participants coming from the different service units of the University of the Philippines Visayas, the Language Program (LP) conducted the second wave of its “Communications at the Workplace” remote training program, from Nov. 11 to Dec. 9, 2021.
Ms. Gerthrode Charlotte Tan-Mabilog and Prof. Elaine Logronio-Monserate, both university faculty members, shared their expertise as resource persons for the four-week training program.
“The university wants you to grow, and with this growth, a mindset that will make you break free from the rope by providing you with the tools and the skills that you can acquire from this training and any other learning and capacity development programs prepared for you by the university,” said Prof. John Lorenz R. Belanio, Vice Chancellor for Administration in his message during the training’s opening program on Nov. 11.
Communications at the Workplace is a 16-hour remote learning, skills enhancement training to provide UPV employees a venue to refresh and improve their communication skills, especially in technical writing and speaking.
“We believe that using effective English language is, of course, one of the most desired communications skills in any successful workplace,” explained Prof. Jessie L. Labiste Jr., faculty-in-charge for LP, highlighting that effective communication helps create a positive work environment.
The workshop training consisted of eight modules of 2-hour sessions each, which included the following topics: Welcoming and Receiving Guests, Telephoning, The Campus Tour, Workplace Writing, Preparing for a Meeting, Making a Report, Making a Presentation, and Making a Press Release. The use of gender-responsive language was also incorporated during the training sessions.
Overseen by Prof. Labiste and moderated by Ms. Mariel L. Terre, LP staff, the workshop training was sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration of the university.
This remote learning skills enhancement program was piloted with the College of Arts of Sciences (CAS) employees with “Communications at the Workplace v2.0” this coming February.
