The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs (OVCCA), in partnership with Honda Safety Driving Center (HSDC) Philippines, conducted a campus safe driving seminar for UPLB drivers to brush up their knowledge on road safety essentials.
The learning activity, held in line with the University’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure community, was participated in by 164 UPLB drivers, including personnel who have been issued authority to drive.
Held at the Charles Fuller Baker Memorial Hall on Dec.7, the event was formally opened by VCCA Roberto P. Cereno who expressed his gratitude to HSDC for partnering with UPLB.
VCCA Cereno enjoined the participants, “Itaas natin ang karangalan at antas ng pagiging driver. Kapag sinabing UPLB driver, ibang klase yan. Professional, prompt, drug-free, at disciplined ang mga yan. Yan ang tatak UPLB driver.”
(Let us elevate the honor and standard of being a driver. When we brand ourselves as UPLB driver, we must commit to it by being professional, prompt, drug-free, and disciplined.)
Michael A. Mamalayan, HSDC senior instructor, served as the resource person and tackled various topics under road safety, including driving requirements, traffic rules and regulations, driver and riding conditions, qualities of a safe driver, and analytical driving.
To prompt responsible road use, he encouraged the attendees to think of their families before taking the road and taking a road risk.
According to him, HSDC has been partnering with various educational institutions as part of its campaign to build a community of safe and responsible road users.
Following the seminar, UPLB authorities cascaded UP Memorandum No. EAZ-NGY-2022-01, requiring all UP employees to take part in energy efficiency and conservation.
Section E of the memorandum requires drivers to conduct regular vehicle maintenance, keep records of fuel consumption and distance traveled, and avoid the practice of idling university vehicles.
