The Swerve tool is developed by DoST-Pagasa under the program Severe Wind Hazard and Risk Assessment for Cebu City in collaboration with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology and the University of the Philippines Diliman-Institute of Civil Engineering. This innovation is used for the impact assessment of severe wind hazard due to tropical cyclones for the target local government unit, Cebu City.

Timbal explained that with the Swerve tool, users can access data on the impact of severe wind hazards, caused by typhoons from the provincial level down to the barangay (village) level. In doing so, this can be a big help to LGU officials, disaster managers and planners to improve their mitigation strategies and develop more effective action plans to be implemented in their respective areas and lessen the impact of this natural hazard.

Through this training that was led by the PFDA Administrative Services Department – Human Resource Division (ASD-HRD), in partnership with the University of the Philippines – Institute of Small-Scale Industries (UP-ISSI), the agency seeks to help managers learn new leadership techniques and refine old managerial skills to effectively run their respective teams.

In light of the government’s thrust to promote urban farming, the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday unveiled the Urban Agri Hydro Hub Learning Center at The Pop Up Katipunan in Quezon City.

“This launching serves as our first step in reaching our goal. Today, we established our country’s first urban farming hydroponic research and training facility to overcome food shortages and heal hunger in the Philippines,” Agriculture Secretary William Dar said in his speech.

The project is a collaboration of the DA, the Philippine Association of Agriculturists Inc. (PAA), University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Institute of Biology, and The Freshest.

Engineers from the UP Institute of Civil Engineering garnered international recognition for their design called Column Footing Grade Beam Monolith, a reinforcement solution that helps in retrofitting houses and improving their resilience to earthquakes and typhoons.
