BANDUNG, Indonesia — The University of the Philippine Open University (UPOU) Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) with the University of Padjadjaran (UNPAD) Faculty of Nursing (FON) conducted a scoping workshop on 15 June at UNPAD, Bandung, Indonesia. During the workshop, faculty members from both FMDS and FON indicated their interest in strengthening the partnership between both universities through academic and student exchange programs, and research publications and collaborations. 

BACOLOD City, Negros Occidental — UP Visayas signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Department of Education – Schools Division of Negros Occidental (DepEd SDO-Negros Occidental) last 26 June 2023 at Forest Park Resort, Bacolod City. DepEd SDO-Negros Occidental is composed of 20 municipalities and 1 city divided into 35 districts.

ASIA RESEARCH NEWS — Analyses of fossils and sediments from Tam Pà Ling (“Cave of Monkeys” in Lao) by an international team of scientists—including a Filipino researcher formerly from the University of the Philippines (UP) and currently at the Flinders University Microarchaeology Laboratory in South Australia—has pushed back the time when we know our species, Homo sapiens, was present in Mainland Southeast Asia. 

LOS BAÑOS, Laguna —  UP Los Baños strengthens academe-industry partnership with DMCI Project Developers, Inc. (DMCI Homes), Seven Peaks Design and Build, Inc. (SPDBI), and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural and Fisheries Engineering (DA-BAFE) in a signing ceremony at the BM Gonzales Hall on 9 June.

QUEZON City —  The University of the Philippine Open University (UPOU) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) last 19 June. The MOU aims to upskill professionals and other stakeholders through the offering of applicable courses, and to enable UPOU to assist DSWD in developing and streamlining its courses to participating learners. 

LOS BAÑOS, Laguna — Dr. Menandro N. Acda, a professor from the Department of Forest Products and Paper Science of the College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR-DFPPS) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, delivered a Professorial Chair Lecture on the “Use of Nanoparticles to Reduce Moisture Absorption and Improve Resistance of Philippine Woods against Decay and Wood Boring Insects” via virtual conferencing last 25 May.

ILOILO City —  The Philippine Genome Center Visayas is collaborating with the DNA Analysis Laboratory of the Natural Sciences Research Institute, University of the Philippines Diliman for the study on Filipino Genomes Research Program (FGRP): Representing the Underrepresented, funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD).

In observance of the annual Day of the Seafarers, the University of the Philippines – Centre International de Formation des Autorités et Leaders (UP-CIFAL Philippines) releases article on the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers that aims to upscale the capacity of Filipino seafarers, promote gender equality, and protect their rights.
