Members of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of San Francisco gathered in-person for the first time since the pandemic for their annual Christmas party.

The event was extra special because they were joined by the Fil-Am Grammy award-winning rapper of the Black Eyed Peas, apl.de.ap, as well as entrepreneur and UP alumnus, Yobie Benjamin.

Just in time for Christmas, Benjamin and the Apl.de.Ap foundation are donating $2.85 million worth of Covid-19 test kits to the UP-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH).

Filipinos’ perceptions on quality of life amid the pandemic were the focus of discussion in the webinar “Kumustahin ang Bayan,” launched on Aug. 6.

“Kumustahin ang Bayan,” the first in the webinar series “#PILIpiLUNAS 2022: Pagbangon at Pagsulong sa Magandang Buhay at Bukas,” (#PILIpiLUNAS 2022) had experts answering the question: “What issues will matter most for the national elections in 2022?”

In his message, UP Diliman (UPD) Chancellor Fidel R. Nemenzo said, “Nation-building has always been at the core of the University’s mission. With this #PILIpiLUNAS 2022 series, we hope to put UP scholarship and expertise to bear on the pressing issues of our time.”

Speakers at the webinar were Pulse Asia president, Dr. Ronald Holmes; Social Weather Station president, Dr. Mahar Mangahas; National Economic and Development Authority undersecretary, Rosemarie Edillon; and Focus on the Global South co-chair, Dr. Walden Bello.

UPLB sealed a total of 20 Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with state, local, and private universities and colleges this year in its quest to connect, collaborate, and capacitate fellow higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country.

At the ceremonial signing of MOUs held via virtual conferencing on Dec. 7, UPLB formalized its partnerships with the  17th-20th partner HEIs – Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), Catanduanes State University (CatSU), Bohol Island State University (BISU), and University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP). 

Through the Institute of Crop Science of the College of Agriculture and Food Science, the UPLB crafted the “Hardin ng Kalusugan at Pagkain” (garden of health and food) as part of the edible landscaping (EL), a farming method in which basic landscaping principles and artistry are attractively merged with crop production to deliver a consistent supply of vegetables to households.

The turnover was held at the DA Central Office in Quezon City.

Waste coconut water has been put to good use, after a group of researchers from University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) developed low-cost phytohormones from it, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said.

The Philippines currently imports phytohormones which are used in tissue culture and plant propagation to induce crop growth and increase yield, DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said.
