In light of the government’s thrust to promote urban farming, the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday unveiled the Urban Agri Hydro Hub Learning Center at The Pop Up Katipunan in Quezon City.

“This launching serves as our first step in reaching our goal. Today, we established our country’s first urban farming hydroponic research and training facility to overcome food shortages and heal hunger in the Philippines,” Agriculture Secretary William Dar said in his speech.

The project is a collaboration of the DA, the Philippine Association of Agriculturists Inc. (PAA), University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Institute of Biology, and The Freshest.

The pandemic and the presence of variants of the new coronavirus has thrust a little-known agency into the limelight: the Philippine Genome Center (PGC).

The PGC has been tasked to do genomic sequencing, an essential job in the country’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, since last year when variants of concern reared their heads.

The center was formed after the Philippines hosted the Human Genome Organization Conference in the Asia Pacific in 2008, which prompted then University of the Philippines (UP) President Emerlinda Roman to establish a committee to look into the creation of a genome center under UP.

The University of the Philippines (UP) joins the global celebration of World Mental Health Day on October 10 as declared by the World Health Organization. This year’s celebration takes on the slogan “Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality,” in recognition of the need to scale up quality mental health services at all levels and to find new ways of providing mental health care to the people.

The UPLB School of Environmental Science and Management (UPLB SESAM), through its Continuing Education and Training Division (CETD), launched a new seminar series called “SESAM ExChanges: Environmental Challenges and Solutions.”

The program, held on Sept 30 via video conferencing and Facebook live streaming, also served as a venue to launch another capacity building program of CETD that intends to attract greater public participation to promote environmental awareness and advocacy in the country.
