The BHLMP aims to build the capacity of the barangay health leaders in strengthening their local health system, promoting community participation and empowerment, and contributing to better health outcomes of the municipality. 

The training was organized by the Dumalag municipal government  led by Mayor Amado Eriberto V. Castro, Jr., Dr. Ana Mae F. Belasoto, the Municipal Health Officer, and Mr. Juan Faduga, Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator. 

Student developers from the University of the Philippines win big in the global Google Developer Student Clubs’ (DSC) 2021 Solution Challenge for their application called “Project Island Response and Intervention for Systematic Evacuation (i-RISE)” which aims to bridge the information gap between local government units, disaster risk management offices, and the island communities of Tubigon, Bohol using Google products.

The Philippine Genome Center (PGC) Visayas received P92.6 million from the Department of Budget and Management to enhance its biosurveillance through timely whole genome sequencing (WGS) of clinical samples.

WGS is vital to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) response of the government. It can be used to detect new variants, if the variants are causing the spike in cases in certain areas, and if there are already local transmissions of the variants.

The clinical trial on tawa-tawa (Euphorbia hirta) as a potential adjunctive treatment for mild and moderate cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is nearing completion, according to Dr. Philip Ian Padilla, vice chancellor for academic affairs of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV).

Padilla, a professor of Microbiology, is the principal investigator of the trial – a collaborative effort of UPV, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City, Philippine Red Cross-Manila, and Quezon Institute.

Six medical technologists and the chief of hospital of the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital (ASMGH) in San Jose, Antique recently completed a training on molecular techniques for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) testing at the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) Visayas in the Regional Research Center of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) in Miag-ao, Iloilo.

This was the first hands-on training under the UP TRAINS 2 Program held at the newly inaugurated PGC Visayas Laboratories.

“Kwentuhan sa Baliguian” seeks to promote reading among schoolchildren in this island barangay as well as to give them a chance to interact with their schoolmates and friends who for more than a year have not attended any classroom engagement and interaction. The students enrolled at Baliguian Elementary School were grouped according to grade level. They listened to stories delivered by volunteer teachers from UP High School in Iloilo and the Division of Professional Education. Together with Asst. Prof. Jessie L. Labiste Jr., faculty-in-charge of the Language Program, and Ms. Marian Janice M. Mediana, Language Program Admin Staff, is Asst. Prof. Jonevee B. Amparo from UP High School Iloilo volunteered to read stories in Filipino. 

Dr. Alicia P. Magos, UPV Professor Emeritus and anthropologist, leads cultural researchers from UP Visayas in various engagement conferences to deliver lectures and share research results on Panay culture as well as in extension activities during this 1st quarter of 2021.

Magos moderated a seminar on Shared Heritage and its Safeguarding/Transmission held on February 19, 2021, organized by the International Information and Network Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP) in coordination with the UNESCO Bangkok Office, and Korea National University of Cultural Heritage (KNUCH).

The Iloilo Provincial Government is gearing to open its COVID-19 Testing Laboratory to be located at the Iloilo Provincial Hospital in Pototan, Iloilo. 

It is currently complying with requirements specified by the inspecting team from the Department of Health and Research Institute for Tropical Medicine. The laboratory will be under the management of the Iloilo Provincial Hospital.
