UPLB conducted its 83rd Seminar On Teaching on Aug. 23-26, a historic one because it was the first-ever virtual iteration of the seminar meant to orient and familiarize newly hired individuals with everything they needed to know to be a member of UPLB’s teaching staff.

Entitled “SOT:Facilitating Learning”, the seminar featured guest lectures and talks from speakers on a variety of topics such as academic and administrative policies for faculty.

As the culture of research and extension continues in the University amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tuklas UPLB segment under Radyo DZLB’s Galing UPLB! program got off the ground with informative and inspiring discussions on plant disease research and volunteerism in UPLB.

May 2021 marked the launch of Tuklas UPLB, becoming the newest addition to the Galing UPLB! program. The segment’s name “tuklas” means to discover – a Filipino term fit to use when talking about the research and extension (R&E) outputs and activities that UPLB is known for. It also showcases first-hand narratives of hardworking and outstanding UPLB REPS and faculty members.

The featured guests of Tuklas UPLB in July showed that UPLB remains true to its mission to serve the public through its research and extension activities, especially during this pandemic. They discussed the role and applications of mathematics in improving the government’s response to COVID-19, and the potential of edible landscaping technology toward food self-sufficiency of Filipinos.

Edible landscaping is gaining importance as rising food prices, food nutrition and food security remain major pressing issues today, said Fernando Sanchez Jr., professor and project leader of the UPLB-CAFS Edible Landscaping unit. Currently, approximately two out of three Filipino households experience food insecurity, he cited.

Sanchez said edible landscaping aims to achieve the four goals of aesthetics, functionality, health and wellness, and self-sufficiency. “With edible landscaping, we can establish attractive and functional spaces.”

The University Library (UL) officially launched the University Knowledge Digital Repository (UKDR) on July 23.

The UKDR, according to University Librarian Concepcion Saul, is UPLB’s new digital platform to store knowledge created by UPLB experts for online access.

Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr. sees this event as a milestone for the UPLB community as it is the first official initiative to comprehensively collect, safeguard, and disseminate the knowledge output and historical materials of UPLB.

The College of Human Ecology (CHE) has cemented its partnership with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Region 4A as they signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on July 23 at the Bienvenido M. (BM) Gonzalez Hall.

The MOA covers their collaborative partnership for the implementation of the Technical Assistance Program on Human Settlements Planning in Calabarzon Region (TAP-HSP Calabarzon).

What is incontrovertible proof that ‘TEAM’ as a slogan-acronym for “Together everyone achieves more,” is not mere sloganeering but a coming together of forces sharing a deep-seated desire to see that no one gets left behind?

It is most certainly a project led by the Learning Resource Center or LRC, which they dub as “Team-Up with #TeamLRC: a subject tutorial series for currently enrolled UPLB students.”

Team-Up with #TeamLRC is a series of online tutorials that aims to provide students with academic support to help them cope with some of their subjects in the current semester that they find difficult and challenging.

The first session of SARAi “e.skwela sa CARAGA” was successfully held last July 2, 2021 via Zoom. Several agriculturists from City Agriculture Office of Bayugan and Municipal Agriculture Office of Las Nieves, and technical staff from DOST-CARAGA and Regional DA-ATI attended the event.

The said training started with a hearty welcome message from Mr. Ricardo N. Varela, Assistant Regional Director for Field Operations Division of the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. XIII (DOST-CARAGA).
