The UP Men’s Basketball Team and the San Beda Red Lions were supposed to play exhibition games on March 14 to 15 2020 in Passi City and Iloilo City. On February 5, 2020, iAmUPHi, in partnership with the UPAA Iloilo Chapter and a local sports organizer were finalizing plans for the games including a dinner for the teams at the Casa Real that was to be hosted by Iloilo Provincial Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr. Everybody was busy preparing for the big event. But fate had a bigger plan.
“During disasters, the most basic needs are to be attended,” says Dr. Johnrev Guilaran, clinical psychologist and assistant professor of the College of Arts and Sciences, UP Visayas during an orientation for the frontliners of the university’s six dormitories at the Miagao campus.
These included dorm managers, dorm staff and janitors assigned therein. The dorms continued their operation for the stranded students of UPV in view of the COVID19.
The UP Visayas College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences has been conducting capacity-building trainings, seminar-workshops, lectures, and other fisheries-related public service activities for the benefit of the municipality and its surrounding communities. Soledad S. Garibay, a University Researcher at the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) and currently the CEO and founder of Algacon Aquafeeds Manufacturing (AAM), developed the first-ever microalgae paste in the country branded as ‘Juan Algae Paste’. The said product is a cost-effective feed for shrimp and milkfish, tilapia, and crustaceans’ hatcheries.
University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) in Miagao, Iloilo donated a total of 200,000 mussel spats to fisherfolk living around Ajuy in Iloilo. Fisherfolk from Barangay Silagon in Ajuy received the mussel spats in three batches – from January to April 2019.

POWER UP, a project of the UP Visayas Division of Professional Education, is a reflective-reflexive public service program for coastal communities in the region that aims to improve education systems through teacher-trainings with emphasis on culture of coastal communities.
